A BIG 10 battle took place in Mackey Arena, as 15-8 Iowa went on the road to take on (1) 22-2 Purdue. Mackey was LOUD, and it was a good BIG 10 matchup.
1st half
The first five minutes were all Purdue. The Boilermakers would get up 15-4 with great shooting from Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer. Iowa would settle in a little bit, and the next five minutes would see Purdue lead 22-11. The Boilermakers would finish the half strong, and would lead 38-21 at half.
Purdue showed really good ball movement, and that led to a lot of good and open shots. Purdue shot 15/34 overall from the floor and 6/17 from three. On the other side, Purdue’s defense held Iowa to a lot of tough shots, shooting 10/34 from the floor and 1/10 from three. Smith for Purdue had 10 at half, while Filip Rebraca and Kris Murray both had six points. Zach Edey had four points and eight rebounds at half.
2nd half
The first seven minutes of the second half were a bit more back and forth, but the Purdue lead was too much to handle, and the score was 57-39. Braden Smith was torching the Hawkeyes, as he had a career high 22 points. He was 7/8 from the floor 4/5 from three with 13 to go. With 8:41 to go, Iowa’s press was starting to make some noise.
They cut the lead down to 11 with the score being 68-57. With five minutes to go, the score was 72-64 Purdue. The Iowa press bothered the Boilermakers badly for a lot of the game. Zach Edey would make his presence felt down the stretch for Purdue, collecting another double double with a pretty awesome sequence.
This game would finish with Purdue getting the game back in control and going on to win. The final score would be 87-73. Smith would finish with 24 for the Boilermakers, while Edey added 14 points and 14 rebounds. Iowa was led by Murray who had 24. Murray had help from Rebraca, who added in 17 points and five boards.
Purdue will need to clean up the press work next week, as the press had them bothered the whole second half. Other than that, it was a strong game put together by the Boilermakers.
