Purdue Defended home court Saturday Night against the Indiana Hoosiers. After losing last time out against Indiana, the Boilermakers looked to get revenge against a Hoosiers team that has not won in Mackey Arena since 2013. A win would also give Purdue at least a share of the BIG 10 title. The game would see the Hoosiers come out on top 79-71, and sweep the season series.

1st Half

The nation’s leader in rebounds and double doubles Zach Edey would open up the scoring for the Boilermakers from the free throw line. The Boilers would then have an explosion of points, going up 13-6 early. Edey would get going early, but IU did not back down. With a little over 10 minutes left in the first half, the score was 19-18 Boilermakers. The backup big for Trayce Jackson Davis, Malik Reneau, would get three fouls early. This would cause Mike Woodson to go a bit deeper into the bench.

IU would continue to stay close, and would only trail by three. The score was 30-27 with five minutes to go. The half would finish with Purdue leading 38-34. Edey would lead the way for the Boilermakers, having 13 points and eight rebounds. Jalen Hood-Schifino would be the leader for the Hoosiers, having 23 points with three rebounds and an assist.

The story for the Hoosiers in the first half was the foul trouble and Jalen Hood-Schifino. They gave Purdue the bonus very early, while also Reneau and TJD had foul trouble. Another issue was TJD had zero points going into half, and that was an issue. For the Boilers, they just need to handle turnovers and make free throws. Having six turnovers and shooting 12/17 from the free throw line, Purdue had a bit of a rough half in that aspect. Other than that, Purdue played a really solid first half.

2nd Half

IU would come out hunting in the second half. Capturing their first lead of the night, the Hoosiers lead 44-40 just a little over four minutes into the half. Trey Galloway would have two good defensive and offensive sequences that he scored five points. 13:18 was when Purdue was forced to call a timeout. Trailing 51-42, Purdue looked lost on the court. Jackson-Davis had 0 points, but a combo of Galloway, Hood-Schifino, and Miller Kopp combined for all but two of Indiana’s 51 points.

With a little over 11 to go, Purdue would cut the deficit to 7 and had a little momentum going their way. With 9:39 TJD would pick up his fourth foul and have to sit, but Indiana led by 11. The Hoosiers interior defense was helping them out big time, and that is what helped them keep growing the lead. With seven to go, the Hoosiers led 65-54. Only scary thing for Indiana at this point was Race Thompson, TJD, and Reneau had four fouls. Indiana would be able to hold on however, and would win 79-71. Hood-Schifino would finish with 35 points, seven rebounds and two assists. For the Boilermakers, Edey would have 26 points, 16 rebounds, and three assists.

Hood-Schifino had a huge night. He scored early, often, and from anywhere he wanted. and was the head of an Indiana offense that just punished Purdue. Indiana would win in Mackey Arena for the first time since 2013. They will take this victory and move on to play Iowa on the 28th of February. As for Purdue, they had a rough night from three. They shot a really low percentage, and could not get enough stops to come back into the game. The Boilermakers look to bounce back from a tough loss on March 2nd, where they will play Wisconsin.
