How did last season go

The 2020-21 Bundesliga season went on as any usual Bundesliga season has for the past seven years. Bayern Munich winning the title by a large margin in front of all the other teams. Although there wasn’t really any competition as Bayern won the league by 13 points. With second place going to RB Leipzig, Dortmund an underwhelming third, and VFL Wolfsburg in fourth. The midtable race was what was getting fans excited because teams like Frankfurt, Leverkusen, and Union Berlin challenged for Europe which went up to the last matchday.

Favorites

Although there is hope for fans that there will be a new champion, it will once again it is expected that Bayern will retain the title. There looks to be nothing that will stop them from continuing their dominance in the league. Bayern was dominant throughout the whole campaign with Robert Lewandowski scoring a record-breaking 41 goals. Although Bayern fans are happy that the team continues to dominate the league, many other fans complain. Bayern lost coach Hans Dieter-Flick to the Germany Job but found their replacement. That replacement is former RB Leipzig coach Julian Naglesmann.

With players like Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, and Thomas Muller. It just shows how stacked this team is. Although there have been many times Bayern has been accused of stealing talent. Dortmund and Schalke are the teams that suffer the most from Bayern. With players going from Dortmund to Bayern or Schalke to Bayern in the past years. Some good examples of that are Leon Goretzka, Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski, and Mats Hummels..

Who will be able to dethrone them

Dortmund are the second favorites to win the league, but will likely suffer again this campaign. Last season was a season to forget as they struggled a lot and only managed on the final day to get third place. But during their struggles, they fired coach Lucien Favre and intern manager Edin Terzic stepped in. Although they had struggled last year, they will have a new coach in Marco Rose who is coming from rivals Borussia Monchengladbach. As they lost their star player Jadon Sancho who went to Manchester United for 90 million euros.

They managed to keep their other young star Erling Haaland, but will most likely lose him next summer with his release clause kicking in. Dortmund already have found their replacement for Sancho, in dutch star, and PSV forward Donyell Malen. Will Dortmund be able to keep up with Bayern this year? Fans are hoping so that they can dethrone Bayern of their 10th straight Bundesliga title in a row.

The only other team with the squad capable enough to dethrone Bayern is RB Leipzig. Although they lost their coach Julian Naglesmann to Bayern, they found their replacement in American Coach Jesse March. RB Leipzig lost star striker Timo Werner to Chelsea last season, but replaced him with Hee-Chan Hwang from sister club RB Salzburg. They also added Hungarian wonderkid Dominik Szoboszlai. Although many fans don’t think they are a serious club, they have been very active this summer in the transfer market. They have added Andre Silva from Eintracht Frankfurt, US wondered Caden Clark , Croatian talent Josko Gvardiol from Dinamo Zagreb.

European Battle

The Europa League battle is always exciting in the Bundesliga as new teams qualify each year. Although Borussia Monchengladbach would be favorites. The in-season announcement of Marco Rose going to Dortmund heavily affected their performances as they went on a terrible losing streak. Although they lost their manager, they managed to pipe another team’s manager in Adi Hutter from Eintracht Frankfurt. They will look to perform better this year as they finished in 9th place last season. Monchengladbach managed to keep their talented players in Alassane Plea, Marcus Thuram, Remy Beisebeini, Florian Neuhaus and Denis Zakaria.

Bayer Leverkusen just missed out on a Europa League spot after having a strong start to the campaign. At the end of the winter break last season they were top of the league. But a sudden collapse in form made them slip all the way down the table, as they finished off the season in 6th place. With a squad consisting of Moussa Diaby, Leon Bailey, Edmond Tapsoba, Exequiel Palacios and Patrick Schick. They are expected to do better and towards the end of the season, they fired head coach Peter Bosz after such a terrible run in form. Although the form towards the end of the season wasn’t promising, they have added a new coach in Swiss coach Gerardo Seoane. And they have been active in the market focusing on fixing their defensive issues, by signing Mitchel Bakker from PSG and Odilon Kossounou from Club Brugge.

Relegation fight

Things have gotten a lot more interesting at the bottom of the table with multiple teams that could be vulnerable to be going back down. FC Koln barely survived last season and had to go through the relegation playoff. But they don’t look like they wanna stay up as they lost several key players. Those players are Sebastian Bornauw and Ismail Jakobs. They just won’t be the team that will be able to stay up.

Arminia Bielefeld could be the next team to go down as they haven’t done much to strengthen up the team from last season’s campaign. They enjoyed a successful campaign avoiding the relegation playoffs and automatic relegation zone. But with no news of strengthening the team, it looks a little worrying for Arminia fans. Fans are hopeful that this campaign that they can stay up once more and hopefully finish up in midtable.

Next up newly promoted teams VFL Bochum and Greuther Fürth will hope that their summer business and current players will be able to keep them up this year. Bochum has talents like Thomas Eisfeld, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Simon Zoller. But recently lost Robert Zulj their top scorer. Fürth on the other hand have former USA internation Julian Green.

The 2021-22 season is almost near and fans will be ready for an exciting season.
