With the Premier League season only weeks away, it is time to start with predictions for this upcoming season. The 2021-22 season has three newly promoted teams with Norwich, Brentford, and Watford all coming up from the Championship. The teams last went down last year were, Fulham, Sheffield United, and West Brom.
Who are the favorites
Last year’s champions Manchester City will look to defend their title and fight off the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, and their rivals United in hope that they can do it all again. City last season tore apart the league, winning the league 12 points ahead of their city rivals Manchester United. With the likes of Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias. They look like the team to beat this year and it won’t be easy.
Liverpool had a campaign to forget as before the season had commenced, they were the reigning champions after ending a long drought. Many expected Liverpool to claim dominance in the league, but that was not meant to be. Injuries to their star players Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, affected the team’s performance. They barely made it to finish third place. But this season will be very different with a healthy Van Dijk returning. Will Liverpool be able to pipe city of the championship?
Champions League Winners Chelsea will hope that winning the Champions League can propel them towards another trophy. Not a lot of people thought Chelsea would be able to do that after then-manager Frank Lampard was sacked in December. Star Players like Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner all stepped up when it was needed. When New Manager Thomas Tuchel led the squad to a remarkable Champions League victory against favorites Manchester City. Tuchel will look to lead Chelsea to a Premier League Trophy if things go to plan.
European Qualification Race
The Quest for Champions League and Europa League will be an interesting race, as multiple teams will fight it out this year. The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester City, Aston Villa will be challenging each other. There will be only two Europa League spots available and one champions league spot. But who will end up beating those teams.
Arsenal had one of their worst season in over 20 years, finishing eighth place and not qualifying for Europe for the first time in a long time. Coach Mikel Arteta has said that he will be looking to move a lot of pieces this summer in a rebuilding format.
Strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang struggled to get goals and at one point were in the relegation zone. Aubameyang had one of his worst seasons finishing with only 10 goals. Arsenal then relied on youth stars Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe in which propelled the Gunners to a mid-table finish. Arsenal fans have complained over the years that the board never backs the coach. Well, this summer looks like a change with Arsenal signing Nuno Tavers, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and England center-back Ben White.
Tottenham on the other hand has qualified for Europe on the final day of last season. Piping their rivals Arsenal to that spot. But that might have come at a cost as star striker Harry Kane requested to leave the club. If that goes through Tottenham will be looking to struggle this year even though they have added a new coach. Nuno Espirito Santo will be taking charge of Tottenham after leaving Wolves this year. If they can add more depth and strengthen the squad, Tottenham will have a chance to qualify this year.
Europa League race
Leicester City and Aston Villa will be both fighting out for that last Europa league Spot because the teams with more money will definitely secure all four champions league spots. Leicester City endured heartbreak as they failed to qualify for Champions League once again. After being in the top four for the whole year, it was one of the most epic collapses. Veteran Jamie Vardy will look to be on form again and help Leicester finally claim a champions league spot. On the other hand, star midfielder James Maddison looks to be potentially leaving this summer to rivals Arsenal.
Aston Villa who survived relegation two years ago had surprised everyone this past season by beating Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham. Coach Dean Smith is in the transfer market looking to add some star-caliber players in order to continue his push for European football. Star Midfielder Jack Grealish is on the market for Manchester City, but Villa will hope to keep him. As they have strengthened their team up once again adding Emiliano Buendia from Norwich. Ollie Watkins will look to continue his sharp form and hopefully claim the golden boot.
Relegation candidates
The three newly promoted teams are the straight favorites to go back down. Now I know that’s not what a lot of people who support their teams want to hear, but it’s true. Norwich, Brentford, and Watford don’t have what it takes to keep themselves up top. As much money as their owners want to give them, it is a proven fact that most newly promoted teams just go straight back down.
