The 2024 NBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, as teams have until February 8 to make moves.

There’s been a lot of names circulating the trade market, including Dejounte Murray, Zach LaVine, and Malcolm Brogdon just to name a few.

In the buildup to the 2024 trade deadline, we’ll keep you posted with the latest updates.

Grizzlies Give Up on Steven Adams

Grizzlies Receive: Victor Oladipo, two 2024 second-round picks, and a 2025 second-round pick

Rockets Receive: Steven Adams

In the first move of the deadline, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Grizzlies would be sending the injured Steven Adams to Houston in exchange for Victor Oladipo and three second-round picks.

From Memphis’ side of things, they create salary flexibility by sending away Adams’ two-year contract in exchange for the expiring Oladipo deal. Getting draft capital also never hurts.

As for Houston, this was more of a maneuver for the future. Adding in a healthy Adams to mentor Alperen Sengun only increases their depth.

Though the move doesn’t really affect either team’s ceiling this season, it benefits both teams’ direction moving forward.

Detroit Acquires a Sniper

Pistons Receive: Simone Fontecchio

Jazz Receive: Kevin Knox, a 2024 Wizards second-round pick, and the draft rights to Gabriele Procida

The Pistons acquired Italian Forward Simone Fontecchio from Utah early Wednesday afternoon in exchange for Kevin Knox and draft compensation.

Fontecchio had attracted lots of trade buzz as he’s become more of a sharpshooter this season, shooting 39%. Detroit will also be able to keep him as a part of their future plans as Fontecchio will be a restricted free agent this summer.

Boston Get a Big

Celtics Receive: Xavier Tillman

Grizzlies Receive: Lamar Stevens, a 2027 Hawks second-round pick, and a 2030 Mavericks second-round pick

The Celtics added much needed frontcourt depth with the addition of Xavier Tillman on Wednesday. The 25-year-old is averaging 6.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game. He will provide versatility and reduce the workload of Al Horford and Luke Kornet.

As for Memphis, this trade grows their draft compensation. They’ve now acquired five second-round picks between this and the Adams trade.

Monte Morris to Minnesota

Timberwolves Receive: Monte Morris

Pistons Receive: Shake Milton, Troy Brown Jr., and a 2030 second-round pick

The West’s top seed added a valuable veteran piece as the Pistons sent Monte Morris to Minnesota in return for Shake Milton, Troy Brown, and a second-round pick.

Morris has only suited up in six games so far this season, but last season averaged 10.3 points and 5.3 assists per game in 61 starts for Washington.

Detroit also adds two younger players at the positions they lost, with Milton replacing Morris and Brown Jr replacing Knox.

Philly brings in Buddy

76ers Receive: Buddy Hield

Pacers Receive: Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz, and three second-round picks

The Philadelphia 76ers opened the 2024 trade deadline day by bringing in a proven sharpshooting veteran in Buddy Hield from Indiana in return for Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz and three second-round picks.

For the Sixers, this instantly provides them with a starting-caliber marksman that they’ve been missing ever since JJ Redick. Hield’s floor-spacing ability creates more room for Tyrese Maxey to operate the offense, and could keep playoff defenses on their toes if Joel Embiid is back by that time

For Indiana, the finally get rid of a disgruntled Hield and open up salary flexibility as they are not expected to keep Marcus Morris. Not to mention having extra draft capital never hurts.

Raptors Buy in on Olynyk

Jazz Receive: Kira Lewis, Otto Porter, and a 2024 first-round pick (least favorable of OKC/LAC/HOU/UTA)

Raptors Receive: Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji

The Toronto Raptors were the team to buy in on Kelly Olynyk, also adding Ochai Agbaji, to Utah in return for Kira Lewis, Otto Porter and a first-round pick.

It’s a bit of a puzzling move for a seemingly-rebuilding Raptors. But Olynyk is a piece they can use now and Agbaji is another young guy they can add to their core of Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.

For Utah, they seemingly look to be selling and looking towards the future, getting another 2024 first-round pick to add.

Pistons pick up Danuel House

Pistons Receive: Danuel House

76ers Receive: 2024 second-round pick via the Knicks

The Philadelphia 76ers sent Danuel House to Detroit in return for a second-round pick.

The Sixers mainly did this deal to clear cap to play the buyout market, as they’ve already been linked to the hometown veteran Kyle Lowry.

As for the Pistons, they continue the mass overhaul of their roster. They are not expected to keep House.

Oklahoma City adds a Veteran

Thunder Receive: Gordon Hayward

Hornets Receive: Tre Mann, Davis Bertans, Vasilije Micic, and draft compensation

The Charlotte Hornets have finally cut ties with former all-star Gordon Hayward, sending him to Oklahoma City in return for Tre Mann, Davis Bertans, Vasilije Micic and draft compensation.

For the Thunder, they added exactly what they desperately needed on this Western conference contender: Veteran leadership. Hayward hasn’t been in all-star form since 2017, but he’s been a consistent 15 point per game guy ever since. This season, Hayward is averaging 14.5, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, shooting 46.8% from the field and 36.1% from 3. He fits the young team well and will finally have an opportunity to contribute to winning basketball again.

For the Hornets, they buy in on potential with Tre Mann. The former first-round pick hasn’t played much this season in Oklahoma City, but has a similar size and skillset of Terry Rozier, who they shipped out earlier this month. Mann is only 22 years old, and could complement LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller well.

Mavericks Go Big with Gafford

Mavericks Receive: Daniel Gafford

Wizards Receive: Richaun Holmes and draft compensation

The Dallas Mavericks added a dynamic young Center in Daniel Gafford from Washington in return for Richaun Holmes and draft compensation.

For Dallas, they get an underrated big in Gafford, who can play both sides of the ball as a lob threat and elite shot blocker. So far this season for the Wizards, he’s averaging 10.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. Adding Gafford removes pressure from rookie big Dereck Lively come playoff time.

For Washington, you sell high on Gafford and get some undisclosed draft compensation in return. Depending on what the picks end up being, it’s a fine trade for an obviously rebuilding Wizards team.

Nets and Raptors swap Point Guards

Nets Receive: Dennis Schroder and Thad Young

Raptors Receive: Spencer Dinwiddie

The Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors agreed to a trade to send away Spencer Dinwiddie for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young. Both as veteran guards at this stage in their careers, this swap might address some disgruntlements with both teams.

For the Nets, Dinwiddie has shot the ball very poorly this season, shooting only 39.1% from the field and 32% from 3. So bringing in an experienced and efficient starting-caliber guard in Schroder might address that issue.

For the Raptors, Schroder signed expecting to be in a starting position, but lost his job to Immanuel Quickley following the OG Anunoby trade. They are not expected to keep Dinwiddie moving forward.

Knicks Go All In for the Bench

Knicks Receive: Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks

Pistons Receive: Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacono and two second-round picks

Ever since shipping out Immanuel Quickley as part of the OG Anunoby trade, the Knicks have seemingly been searching for an identity on their depleted bench. And at the 2024 trade deadline, they answered those problems. They brought in Bojan Bogdanovic and reunited with Alec Burks, sending Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacono and second-round picks to Detroit.

For the Knicks, you bring in two snipers, as Burks and Bogdanovic both shoot over 40% from three. But with Bogdanovic, he’s a proven scorer as well. He’s averaging 20.2 points per game so far this season. His size also takes pressure off Josh Hart to have to play the power forward position off the bench. Burks is also a Thibodeau favorite and excelled as a bench scorer for the Knicks in 2021. When the Knicks get over the injury bug, they are a very dangerous team moving forward.

As for Detroit, they mainly buy in on third-year guard Quentin Grimes. Though he’s amidst a down year, he’s shown potential as a shooter and perimeter defender and seems like a quality piece to keep around Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey.

Blazers Get A Young Guard

Celtics Receive: A heavily protected second-round pick

Trail Blazers Receive: Dalano Banton

The Portland Trail Blazers acquired Dalano Banton from Boston at the buzzer for a heavily protected second-round pick.

This adds another depth piece to an already young guard core in Portland, as Banton joins Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Anfernee Simons and veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon. Banton can serve as a reliable insurance policy if any of these guards deal with injuries later in the season.

Springer Heads to Boston

76ers Receive: A second-round pick

Celtics Receive: Jaden Springer

The Boston Celtics acquired a solid young guard in Jaden Springer to add to their slim bench depth. The third-year guard has had limited playing time in Philadelphia, but has shown some flashes on both sides of the ball.

An Indiana Reunion for McDermott

Pacers Receive: Doug McDermott

Spurs Receive: Marcus Morris and a 2029 second-round pick via the Clippers

Doug McDermott found his way back into an Indiana Pacers uniform as the deadline hit. San Antonio received the recently traded Marcus Morris and a distant second-round pick. The Spurs plan to waive Morris.

For Indiana, you replace Buddy Hield with another reliable three point marksmen with experience in McDermott. He will also serve as a good mentor for Aaron Nesmith.

Bev is a Buck

76ers Receive: Cam Payne and a second-round pick

Bucks Receive: Patrick Beverley

The Milwaukee Bucks added a defensive specialist to help them on their journey to the playoffs, acquiring Patrick Beverley for Cameron Payne and a second-round pick.

Beverley definitely helps the Bucks’ struggling defensive backcourt. The sacrifice of some perimeter shooting is necessary and replaceable with Damian Lillard and Malik Beasley.

For Philadelphia, they add another floor spacer for the offense when Joel Embiid is back from injury.
