A classic NFL rivalry is renewed as the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys square off on Wild Card weekend. Dallas continues its run of playoff appearances under head coach Mike McCarthy. Meanwhile, it’s a new look Green Bay Packers as the team moved on from long time starting QB Aaron Rodgers in favor of Jordan Love. Let’s preview the Packers and Cowboys, a rivalry that dates back to the earliest Super Bowls and features the iconic Dez Bryant no-catch game.
Green Bay Packers
After being eliminated by the Detroit Lions on the last day of the 2022 regular season, the Packers decided it was time for a change. An unusual offseason involving a darkness meditation led to Aaron Rodgers accepting a trade to the New York Jets. It was the first time since 2008 someone other than Rodgers was regularly under center.
The team struggled early, at one point losing four in a row, and falling to 3-6 through nine games. Then, the Packers found their groove. In Green Bay’s final eight games, the team went 6-2 clinching the final playoff spot in the final game of the season.
Dallas Cowboys
No one had an odder season than the Dallas Cowboys. The team started like gangbusters outscoring the two Giants and Jets by a combined score of 70-10 before losing to the lowly Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys stayed lockstep with the Philadelphia Eagles in the division race despite struggling on the road against teams with winning records.
Eventually, the Cowboys beat the Eagles during Philly’s late season struggles moving Dallas into the division lead. The Cowboys secured another big win against Detroit and clinched the number two seed giving them a home game against the last team to make the playoffs.
Packers and Cowboys Predictions
The Packers finished the season with a 9-8 record but had a losing record of 4-5 on the road. Green Bay played six games against opponents who made the playoffs finishing with a 3-3 record. In years past, the Packers have been road warriors, and they will need to be again if they want to advance in the playoffs.
The Cowboys, on the other hand, finished the year 12-5 but undefeated at home. They played seven games against opponents that made the playoffs, going 3-4 in those games. In previous years, I would’ve picked against the Cowboys because they had a habit of making the playoffs and losing right away. However, they seemed to have gotten that monkey off their backs with a win over Tampa last year. I believe Dallas is the better team. I’m picking the Cowboys to win.
Final Score – Dallas Cowboys 38 | Green Bay Packers 20
