Despite throwing for four touchdowns in a 45-29 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Brock Purdy did not want to put the spotlight on his performance. Instead, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback spoke highly of his teammate, saying that running back Christian McCaffrey should be MVP.

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Purdy is the current favorite to win the award at -190. Rounding out the top three are Dak Prescott (+450) and Lamar Jackson (+500). McCaffrey currently has the fifth-best odds to win MVP at +1200.

Although sportsbooks see Purdy as the better player this season, Purdy does not share the same sentiment.

“I think Christian should be MVP,” Purdy said following Sunday’s win over Arizona. “I really do believe that. He does everything for us. Runs the ball well, catches the ball, he does everything. In my eyes, that’s the MVP.”

McCaffrey was all over the field Sunday, going off for 115 yards rushing and 72 receiving yards. His three touchdowns in the victory put him at 20 on the season, which is tied with Raheem Mostert for the most in the NFL.

McCaffrey leads the league in rushing yards with 1,292. He is less than 100 yards away from surpassing his career-best 1,387 rushing yards he achieved in 2019. McCaffrey also has over 500 receiving yards, and his seven receiving touchdowns are the most he has ever had in a season.

Although Purdy was clear that McCaffrey should win MVP, he also talked about his candidacy as the current favorite for the award.

“I’m honored, but I think I have a great team around me,” Purdy said. “Guys willing to make plays and stuff. I’m trying to do my part and help our team win. I’m very honored to hear it, but I think we just have an MVP team overall.”

Purdy has undoubtedly made his case for the award, whether he believes McCaffrey should be MVP or not. He has thrown for 3,795 yards and has a league-leading 29 touchdown passes.

The 49ers may have a tough time choosing their MVP, but they can all agree that a long postseason run matters more to this team than anything else.
