A New Voice In South Bend

Micah Schrewsberry is on the move. Notre Dame moves on from the loosest coach in America, Mike Brey, after 21 historical years. With a new age of the NIL (Name, Likeliness and Recruiting), it was time to move on to the new voice in Micah Shrewsberry, former Purdue assistant coach alongside Matt Painter and Penn State Coach. Micah got the luxury of coaching Jaden Ivey, now an NBA guard for the Pistons.

Better than Brey?

Shrewsberry first started as an assistant coach at the division three level at Wabash University, a college in Indiana, as an assistant from 1999-01. He coached in Indiana until he got an NBA gig with Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics as an assistant from 2013-19. He then returned to coaching in Indiana, alongside Matthew Painter, Purdue basketball head coach, as an assistant for three years during the pandemic. He was offered a fantastic opportunity in Pennsylvania to coach Penn State as a head coach, his second head coaching gig. The first head coaching opportunity he took was coaching IU South Bend, an NAIA division school, so Penn State was his first “real” head coaching opportunity. Now, he has signed a seven-year contract to be the head coach back in his hometown, Indiana, this time coaching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But man, does he have some big shoes to fill. Mike Brey put the Irish on the map! Brey led the Irish to 13 NCAA tournament appearances in 21 years, making it his first three years as coach, and he also led them to two Elite Eights and two Sweet Sixteens. The Maui Invitational, the conference championship in 2016 beating North Carolina, Micah will have to keep up to stay up.

Past Success

As we know, the new voice in south bend, Micah Schrewsberry, has coached Jaden Ivey, but he has also coached guys like Zach Edey, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward, etc. He was there when Butler lost to the NCAA Championship against the Blue Devils when Gordon Hayward missed a half-court heave. He was also the assistant when Purdue went to the Elite Eight and lost to the Tennessee Volunteers. I can go on, but as head coach, those successes have been minimal in smaller opportunities. At Indiana South Bend, the team did not fare well, not even making the NAIA Tournament in his three years there. At Penn State, however, he did take the Nittany Lions to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and win since 2011. The 23 wins this year are the fourth-most in program history. That says something about the leader and who Notre Dame is getting under the helm as the new voice in South Bend, a proven winner.

X’s and O’s

Micah probably does not know who will be on his roster next year. There’s no given either, with the transfer portal acting like a free agency in the NBA. JJ Starling just transferred to Syracuse, while Dom Campbell and Robby Carmody entered the transfer portal. Likely, Dom returns, but Carmody probably will move on in his last year of eligibility. Matt Zona showed growth in the ACC tournament against Virginia Tech, showing some fight and shooting from the arc. Notre Dame had three prospects before Brey resigned; now they only have Marcus Burton, who revealed he is 100% committed to Micah. The team will be young, bearing that Micah doesn’t use a Steve Forbes page and builds a winning team through the portal. It will be a rebuild whether Irish fans like it or not, but with Schrewsberry as the new voice in South Bend; he should have the Irish in good hands.
