Camden Yards opened up for postseason baseball for the second year in a row, with Bobby Witt Jr. and the Kansas City Royals coming into town and effectively slaughtering the birds and advancing to the ALDS in just two games.
Game 1
Cole Ragans and Corbin Burnes toed the rubber in game one, and both dominated.
Ragans’ final line:
6 IP 4 H 0 ER 0 BB 8 K
Burnes’ final line:
8 IP 5 H 1 ER 1 BB 3 K
The scoring in this game started and ended in the top of the sixth inning, with Bobby Witt Jr. driving in Maikel Garcia for a 1-0 lead, a lead that the Royals bullpen never relinquished.
Lucas Erceg recorded the save with 1.1 innings and two strikeouts, slamming the door shut on a quick 1-0 win to go up 1-0 on the series.
Game 2
It was a veteran matchup in Game 2 with Zach Eflin and Seth Lugo facing off. The two turned in near identical performances, and both left their bullpen to do the heavy lifting down the stretch.
Eflin’s final line:
4 IP 4 H 1 ER 1 BB 3 K
Lugo’s final line:
4.1 IP 5 H 1 ER 1 BB 6 K
The scoring began much quicker in Game 2 as a Vinnie Pasquantino single in the first inning put the Royals on the board. Their second and final run came in the sixth inning from none other than Bobby Witt Jr., and that was enough to hold off the ice cold Baltimore offense.
Cedric Mullin’s solo home run in the fifth inning turned out to be the only run the Orioles were able to muster as they lose 2-1.
This sweep at the hands of the Royals solidifies a ten year hiatus from a postseason win for the Orioles, with their most recent postseason win occurring back in Game 3 of the 2014 ALDS.
The Kanas City Royals will now head into the Bronx and face off against the duo of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, hoping to continue their lights out pitching.
