Fight fans have been wondering who could headline the historic UFC 300 card in April, on Saturday night UFC President Dana White gave us our answer. Former Light Heavyweight Champion Jamahal Hill returns from injury to take on current 205-pound title holder Alex Pereira. This is a fantastic fight that will bring clarity to the division, but not the headliner most fans expected.
Many rumors were thrown around about a potential return from Israel Adesanya. MMA podcaster/Comedian Brendan Schaub said he was “Not Blown Away” by the UFC 300 Main Event. Journalist Ariel Helwani also stated that he was expecting more from the announcement.
One thing to keep in mind is that the headliner of UFC 200 also wasn’t a high-profile fight. Amanda Nunes and Miesha Tate were the Main Event that night, but the fight card was extremely deep with talent. UFC 300 will be a similar situation, with ranked contenders appearing on the prelims.
Hill is now fully recovered from an Achilles injury he suffered last July. That Injury forced Hill to relinquish his title, which allowed Pereira to become champion. When Hill won the belt he defeated Pereira’s trainer, former champion Glover Teixeira. This Main Event matchup is destined to be fireworks, as both fighters are finishers who prefer to stand and trade. UFC 300 takes place on April 13th.
