Devin Williams

Brewer’s closer Devin Williams is out for 3 months with stress fractures in his back as reported by Jeff Passan. Williams is coming off his second NL Reliever of the Year and helping the Brewers make the Postseason. He posted a 1.53 ERA and 36 Saves in 58.2 innings. He has been a dominant closer that new Manager Pat Murphy was looking forward to counting on early in his rookie managerial campaign. This is a blow to a young Brewers team that had high hopes for Devin Williams to be a veteran in the clubhouse.

Devin William’s Replacement

The loss of Devin Williams is going to hurt, but that bullpen was good all around. The Brewers had one of the best bullpens in the MLB last season posting a 3.43 ERA which was good for 2nd in the MLB. Players like Abner Uribe, Joel Payamps, and Elvis Pegeuro all had an ERA under 3.40. They are the most likely pitchers to get the ball in the 9th for the Brewers. It could be one of them every time, or even a rotating cast of “closers”. One obscure option would be to move Aaron Ashby to the bullpen in some role. With that, you could put the Brewers in a position to sign a free-agent starter.

The Brewers could be in the market for a starter. Someone like Mike Clevinger or Blake Snell could be potential signings. Although, Snell seems like a Yankee and not someone the Brewers would want to drop a big contract on. Furthermore, this bullpen will still be among the tops in the MLB especially with some young guys coming up, i.e. Robert Gasser. With all of this in mind, the Brewers should be able to survive without Devin Williams for the duration of his injury. They have plenty of guys ready to step up, and Brewer fans should not worry too much about this bullpen. The rotation, however, will be a point of interest as the Brewers try for another Postseason appearance.
