Former assistant manager of the Detroit Red Wings, Pat Verbeek, has been named the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, as announced on Thursday.

Over a span of two decades, Verbeek played for five NHL teams. He has scored 522 goals and 1,062 points over his playing career. In 2006, Verbeek joined the Detroit Red Wings as a scout after ending his playing days.

About Verbeek

Verbeek worked with Yzerman for eight years running the Tampa Bay Lightning before becoming the assistant general manager with the Detroit Red Wings for the last two and a half years.

Verbeek will succeed Bob Murray as the sixth permanent GM in the 28-year history of the Ducks. So Murray resigned his post in November after a 13-year run amid a team investigation into his abusive behavior toward players and staff.

Future For the Ducks

A few key players are ending their contracts this season, including Rickard Rakell, Hampus Lindholm, and Josh Manson. But the young talent of Troy Terry, Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, and others has helped the team remain competitive.

Verbeek also isn’t dealing with a cap table bloated with long-term deals, unlike some other managers this season. Adam Henrique, Jakob Silfverberg, John Gibson, and Cam Fowler are the only players signed through the 2023-24 season. As a result, Verbeek will change the Ducks for the better in short order.

The deadline for Verbeek’s hiring is more than six weeks away, so there’s plenty of time to make these decisions. And he will have a few days to get familiar with the new organization and staff.

Statement From Henry and Susan Samueli:

“Susan and I are delighted to welcome Pat Verbeek to our community to guide our hockey club as the next General Manager of the Anaheim Ducks. Pat’s outstanding work ethic and vast knowledge of the game as a successful executive and player throughout his 35-plus years in the NHL make him an outstanding fit to lead us forward. He brings a unique pedigree, having vast experience and serving in integral leadership roles for championship teams as both a player and executive at the NHL level.”
