The Chicago Cubs are expected to trade left-hander Andrew Chafin to the Oakland Athletics. The deal, which is not yet official, was reported by Mark Feinsend and Ken Rosenthal. So, such moves from the Cubs should be something to keep an eye on as the team prepares for a rebuild. However, the Athletics will have to give up their number nine prospect Greg Deichmann. But, Rosenthal reports that there is a second player heading to the Cubs but that information has not yet been reported.

If the deal goes through, this will be Chafin’s third MLB team in his young career. Chafin spent his first eight years in the Diamondbacks organization after being the team’s first-round pick in 2011. However, he did not appear in a major league game until the 2014 season. Throughout his time in the minors and first years in the majors, he was a starting pitcher. But in 2015, the Diamondbacks moved Chafin into a bullpen role, where he has been in his career since.

However, his time in Arizona ended at the trade deadline last season when he was traded to the Cubs organization.
With the Cubs, he was a solid left-handed option for manager David Ross and a strong table-setter for Kimbrel.

Analysis of the Andrew Chafin Trade

The biggest winner of the deal is the Oakland Athletics, as they acquire a strong option in the bullpen. Considering the Athletics are in the middle of a playoff run. The key for any team in the playoff is a strong pitching core. For the Athletics, who are in a pennant race, the addition of Chafin should be a great help to the bullpen. For the Athletics, this is a very decent trade though they are giving up a future talent. The only benefit for the Cubs is receiving a top ten prospect in Deichmann, which will help start putting the foundational pieces in place for the rebuild.
