Defending F1 series champion Max Verstappen takes the checkered flag in the Australian Grand Prix, nabbing his first win at the track and Red Bull Racing’s first win at Australia since 2011. The red flag was thrown three times, including once with just three laps to go. In the end, almost half of the field failed to finish while the top two drivers in the world recorded another 1-2 finish.
MAX VERSTAPPEN HOLDS OFF LEWIS HAMILTON
The final red flag set up a lot more interesting racing. Verstappen appeared to be coasting to victory when the crash on lap 55 led to the red flag. Restarting the race allowed Lewis Hamilton to catch up to Verstappen, but Verstappen was able to hold him off. As a viewer, throwing the red flag so the race could finish under green makes the race more exciting. But, from Verstappen’s perspective, the crash in question wasn’t that bad and probably only required a yellow instead of a red. It’s unlikely the race would’ve restarted had F1 officials thrown the yellow, though.
