Best Bet: Target the Total in Raiders vs. Jaguars

Raiders Colts week 17
(Benjamin Hager/Las Vegas Review-Journal)

For the start of the 2022 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders travel to Canton for the first pre-season game. Many bettors around the United States are excited to be able to bet on something other than the MLB or WNBA. When the ball is kicked off tonight in Ohio, there will be football on TV until February, which is just as exciting as betting on any game.

Here are some of the betting trends for Hall of Fame game via covers.com:

  1. The under is 13-3 in the Jaguars last 16 games as an underdog.
  2. The under is 4-0 in the Raiders last 4 games as a favorite.
  3. The under is 4-1 in the Raiders last 5 games vs. AFC.
  4. Since 2010, the under is 7-2 in the HOF game.
  5. Since 2014, only one team has scored 20 points or more in the HOF game.

From these betting trends, there is a definite side to be on for tonight’s game. Sorry to all the people that watch the game for the offense because tonight is about defense and special teams!

Let’s look at the starters and role players for each side:

Jaguars:

Some notable players that are not playing tonight for the Jaguars include Trevor Lawrence, James Robinson, and Travis Etienne. Another player worth mentioning is C.J. Beathard, the listed backup to Trevor Lawrance. This means that the Jaguars will be down to their third-string QB and RB to start the game. Because of that, many of the snaps could be led on the offensive side by inexperience and “first game jitters.” They luckily secured the first draft pick (again) with Travon Walker, who should see some 1st half play tonight. Doug Pederson will make his debut as the head coach. Look for him to minimize mistakes as much as possible without risking injury to his potential starters.

Raiders:

Although Lawrence is listed out for the Jaguars, nothing has been said about Derek Carr. The assumption would be that McDaniels does not start Carr. Expect Josh Jacobs to be limited to the first series or not play at all if Carr is out. The newest addition from the Packers Devante Adams will likely be limited or kept out as well. Most star defensive players not listed injured will be playing for the Raiders tonight. McDaniels has been quoted saying that he believes their defense will shine in the preseason.

Final Pick:

There has been a lot of change and higher expectations set on both of these teams. The Jaguars had one of their worst seasons ever as a franchise with only winning three games last year. The Raiders finished with a ten-win season, but lost to the Chiefs twice in their division, leaving them out of playoff contention. Without significant playing time from starters in multiple areas, this is not the game where points are going to be scored offensively.

The betting trends give a great picture of what the outcome is likely going to be tonight. Tonight, expect some sloppy offensive football, missed tackles on defense, and very physical special teams. This game should not result in 30+ points.

Prediction: Raiders 14, Jaguars 10

Best Bet: Under 30.5 points -110 (1 Unit)
