Next up on our conference preview list – the Big-12.

It was quite an interesting offseason for the Big-12. Any excitement going into this season was quickly impacted by the announcement of Texas and Oklahoma going to the SEC. Though that announcement happened this year, the expected move is not happening until closer to 2025. So over the next couple of years it will be like an awkward family dinner, where everyone knows a divorce is happening, but just hasn’t happened yet.

So what will happen this year? I think it will be a very competitive league with Oklahoma and Iowa State leading the way.

Here are your Big-12 Football 2021 predictions:

Projected order of standings

  1. Iowa State
  2. Oklahoma
  3. TCU
  4. Texas
  5. Oklahoma State
  6. Kansas State
  7. Baylor
  8. West Virginia
  9. Texas Tech
  10. Kansas State

Iowa State

  • 2020 Record: 9-3
  • Preseason Prediction: 12-0
  • Big-12 Prediction: 9-0
  • Predicted losses: None
  • Big wins predicted: Iowa, Oklahoma State, Texas, Oklahoma

Count me as a believer in this Cyclone team. They have all of the major pieces coming back and I think they are primed for the greatest season in program history.

This team should score a lot, they scored over 32 points a game last season and nearly everyone is back from that offense. The same with the defense led by Mike Rose as I think they will be the best defense in the entire Big-12.

What concerns me is they are playing recruits not as highly ranked as the ones Oklahoma has and eventually those “stars” end up mattering. Whether that’s after injuries, in close games, making a big play, will they have enough through development to own the day.

  • 2020 Record: 9-2
  • Preseason Prediction: 11-1
  • Big-12 Prediction: 8-1
  • Predicted losses: Iowa State
  • Big wins predicted: Nebraska, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma State

The Sooners are going for their seventh title in a row in the Big-12. The offensive should again be pretty elite and it’s expected that the defense will be pretty good. So why do I have them finishing second this year? That really comes down to my belief in Iowa State this year and the fact that I am not yet a believer in the fact that this defense will indeed be better.

I believe that Spencer Rattler is good but not as great as the previous sooner Heisman winning QB’s. He will make some mistakes that will cost this team this year.

  • 2020 Record: 6-4
  • Preseason Prediction: 9-3
  • Big-12 Prediction: 6-3
  • Predicted losses: Oklahoma, Iowa State, Kansas State
  • Big wins predicted: Cal, Texas, Oklahoma State

I loved the way the Horned Frogs finished 2020 winning 5 out of their last 6 contests. That momentum should carry over to 2021 and I expect a bounce back year for coach Gary Patterson.

Max Duggan should also have a break out year and lead this team to some good victories and close defeats to teams that are much better than them. I am worried a bit about the offensive line, you would like to see some improvements from them.

  • 2020 Record: 7-3
  • Preseason Prediction: 9-3
  • Big-12 Prediction: 6-3
  • Predicted losses: Oklahoma, Iowa State, TCU
  • Big wins predicted: Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas is back! Well not quite yet. It is a new era after the dismissal of Tom Herman and the hiring of Steve Sarkisian. I was never a fan of coach Sarkisian in his stops in the Pac-12, I just thought he teams always underperformed. But I was quite impressed with his play calling at Alabama. Let’s see if that transitions with him to Texas.

If I was Texas I would just give the ball to Bijan Robinson and ride him to as many victories as you can. On top of him you have some Alabama running back transfers to back him up. What is concerning is the QB as I don’t think a decision has been made there yet.

Oklahoma State

  • 2020 Record: 8-3
  • Preseason Prediction: 8-4
  • Big-12 Prediction: 5-4
  • Predicted losses: Texas, TCU, Iowa State, Oklahoma
  • Big wins predicted: Boise State, Kansas State, Baylor

I really enjoyed the Cowboys last year. They were only 8-3 but were just a few plays from having 10 wins.

I think QB Spencer Sanders should have a good year with an improved O-line. This team did score less than usual last year but I expect that to improve with Sanders coming into his third season.

My hope for the Cowboys is to continue to improve their defense so they are not so offense driven and can be a more well rounded team. They have the pieces to make that happen with Trace Ford and Malcolm Rodriguez coming back.
