BREAKING NEWS, Tokyo Olympics:
US gymnast Simone Biles has chosen to withdraw from the women’s individual all-around. This competition is scheduled to take place on Thursday. She cited her mental health as the reason for the departure.
After completing her first event in the team final Monday, Biles pulled herself from the rest of the competition for the night. She say she realized that she would risk harm, not only to herself, but also to her teams’ score, if she continued. She did, however, remain on the floor to encourage and cheer her teammates to their silver medal win.
USA Gymnastics Reacts to Biles’ Decision
In a statement made by USA Gymnastics on Wednesday morning, the organization supported Simone’s decision, stating that:
“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health. We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”

Future Plans
The finals for each of the individual events will commence next week. Simone advanced to finals in each of the four apparatus. However, the decision of whether or not she will compete will be made by the team doctors for USA Gymnastics.
