Dylan Strome Trade Rumors Persist
Even with the turmoil in the Blackhawks front office and behind the bench, Dylan Strome trade rumors seem to persist. He was benched for the first four regular season games even though he had a good training camp and preseason.
The issue seems to be that the Blackhawks have too many centers. Including Strome they show seven centers on their roster. It seems the biggest reason Strome has become expendable is that the team acquired Tyler Johnson. Both centers average about the same points per game, so it’s a mystery why Johnson was brought in.
Granted, Johnson coming to Chicago allowed them to unload Brent Seabrook‘s large contract ($6.875 million), who went to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Seabrook’s deal runs for two more years after this season.
Plus, Johnson is 31, while Strome is just 24-years-old.
Trade Destinations for Strome
There are a few teams who should consider trading for Strome.
Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames had a real down year last season. While they have picked it up a bit this year, how long will it last? Besides Elias Lindholm, who has 14 points, seven goals in 12 games as of this writing, they could use some second-line scoring. While Strome has not been a big-time scorer, his 0.58 career points per game could help the Flames offense.
Seattle Kraken
The Seattle Kraken could also use Strome’s talents. He can add some third line strength which the Kraken could use. They are an expansion team and it may be a good change for Strome to go out west again. Adding him to the Kraken’s Jaden Schwartz and Alexander Wennberg at center ice gives them some needed strength down the middle. They could send the Blackhawks a draft pick in return.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers have the cap space to grab Strome, so that’s not an issue. He could even join his brother Ryan Strome, and who knows–it may help both of them playing together. The Rangers are weak down the middle and Dylan Strome could help fill the gap. Again, a draft pick or a defensive prospect may satisfy the Chicago club as a return.
Final Analysis
By trading Dylan Strome, the Blackhawks could add a draft pick or prospect, plus increase their cap space. Strome’s $3 million cap hit is a lot for a player the team isn’t using. If they don’t see Strome in their long-term plans, then they should trade him and move on.
They may wait until closer to the March trade deadline, but if Strome’s ice time continues to be reduced, his value will also be reduced. Trading him sooner rather than later seems logical.
Yet, with the recent turn of events with the Chicago franchise, it seems logic has blown away in the Windy City.
