A year after being swept in the Wild Card round in the 2023 MLB Postseason, the Toronto Blue Jays finished at the bottom of the AL East with a record of 74 – 88.
Expectations were relatively high for the Blue Jays as they had partaken in October baseball in three of the past four years. Unfortunately, the offense was a big letdown in 2024, leading to hitting coach Guillermo Martinez’s firing.
Blue Jays 2024 Offensive Struggles
Martinez has been Toronto’s hitting coach since 2019 and has led a generally consistent and strong offensive group. This group however, scored just 671 runs in 2024 (23rd in MLB), much lower than their 746 mark in 2023. They especially lacked power as they ranked 26th in MLB in home runs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. held a team high 30 long balls, with second place being 19, held by George Springer.
Guerrero is at the bottom of Toronto’s offensive concerns as he was able to repeat his 2021 breakout season (166 wRC+) with a 165 wRC+ in 2024. Guerrero has seemingly returned to form after posting back to back solid (.819 and .789 OPS) but not spectacular seasons.
Unfortunately, his counterpart Bo Bichette struggled mightily when on the field this year, slashing just .225/.227/.322.
Despite the ugly numbers, Bichette himself did not drag the offense down all on his own. It was a collective effort (or lack thereof) between the offense that resulted in them being ranked at or below average in the majority of the offensive statistics.
AVG – 19th in MLB
SLG – 20th in MLB
OBP – 13th in MLB
OPS – 18th in MLB
Expectations for 2025
The plan for 2025 is currently unclear, as Don Mattingly still holds the position of bench coach/offensive coordinator. The Blue Jays will be in search of a new face at the hitting coach position to hopefully whip this offense back into shape, and back into October baseball.
