Boise State Fires Head Coach Andy Avalos

After a 22-14 record leading the charge at his alma mater, Boise State has decided to fire Andy Avalos.

“I am grateful for the passion, effort and dedication Andy has given to our community and his alma mater while serving as our head coach,” athletic director Jeramiah Dickey said in a statement. “Andy will always be a Bronco and we wish him and his family all the best in their next steps.”

In the time that Andy Avalos has led the charge, the Broncos have not ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 one time. In fact, Boise State is in danger of its first losing season since 1997. In the time that Avalos has served as the head coach, the team did go 10-4 and was named the 2022 Mountain West Coach of the Year. However, the Broncos 19-year streak of making the AP Top 25 ended in 2021.

Avalos’ firing comes after Boise State’s best game, blowing out New Mexico State. Surprisingly, Boise State made the Mountain West Championship game after a midseason staff change at offensive coordinator. Under previous head coaches Chris Petersen, Bryan Harsin and Dan Hawkins, Boise State has been a disruptive team. They’ve threatened their way into the national championship picture several times. Winning the Fiesta Bowl on three separate occasions and reaching the Top 5 on five separate occasions. The work that Avalos has done didn’t live up to the standard.

Dickey named defensive coordinator and longtime Boise State assistant Spencer Danielson as the interim coach.

Coaching Candidates to Replace Andy Avalos:

Jeff Choate, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Texas

Choate was an assistant at Boise State from 2006-11 and had a successful stint as a head coach with Montana State. He’s had several stops along the way with Washington State, Florida, Washington and Texas. With his ties to the program, Choate is someone who could be interviewed.

Ryan Grubb, Offensive Coordinator, Washington

Grubb has followed Washington HC Kalen DeBoer everywhere he’s been. With how successful Washington has been over the past two years its only a matter of time before Grubb gets a chance to be a head coach.

Brian Harsin, Former Boise State Head Coach

Could we see a reunion here with Harsin? His tenure at Auburn ended after a dismal 9-12 record. However, he’s known for his work with the Broncos from 2014-20.

Spencer Danielson, Interim Head Coach

Depending on how the Broncos do over their last two games against Utah State and Air Force, there’s a chance that Danielson gets considered. He’s been with the team since his GA year in 2017, quickly moving up the ranks and becoming the Defensive Coordinator this season.
