After being acquired from the Red Sox on Dec. 30, left-handed pitcher Chris Sale and the Atlanta Braves have agreed on a two-year, $38 million contract extension. By reworking his contract, Sale will receive about $17-$18 million in new guaranteed money.

Chris Sale Extension Details

Sale, who turns 35 at the end of March, was originally due $17.5 million this year and had $10 million deferred for 15 years. His previous contract also had a club option of $20 million for 2025. Instead, Sale will now receive $16 million this year and $22 million the following year. In addition, the new deal gives the Braves an $18 million club option for 2026.

The Boston Red Sox traded Sale to the Braves less than a week ago. Atlanta received Sale and $17 million from Boston in exchange for infield prospect Vaughn Grissom. Sale waived his no-trade clause to join the team.

In 20 starts last season with the Red Sox, Sale had a record of 6-5. His 4.30 ERA was the second highest of his career behind only his 2019 season when he went 6-11 in 25 starts with a 4.40 ERA.

Sale began his career with the Chicago White Sox in 2010. He spent seven seasons with the team before being traded to the Red Sox prior to the start of the 2017 season. He won the World Series with Boston in 2018, which was the last year Sale was named an MLB All-Star.

Sale has collected 2,189 strikeouts throughout his 13 seasons in the majors. He led the American League in strikeouts during the 2015 and 2017 seasons and in complete games during the 2013 and 2016 seasons. In his MLB career, Sale has a record of 120-80 in 263 starts with a 3.10 ERA.
