One of the top first basemen on the market has reportedly been scooped up by one of baseball’s best teams. Jose Abreu, the 2020 American League MVP, is signing a three-year, $58.5 million deal with the reigning World Champion Houston Astros.
Amazing Abreu
Jose Abreu just wrapped up his ninth season in the majors with yet another excellent showing. He is just two months away from turning 36 which for professional athletes may seem old, but Abreu shows no signs of slowing down.
All nine of his seasons have been with the Chicago White Sox where he has proven himself to be one of baseball’s best first. Over 1270 career games he has posted a .304 AVG with 1445 hits, 303 doubles, 243 homers, 386 walks and 863 RBI. In his eight seasons, he has recorded eight seasons of 130-plus hits including six of 170-plus hits.
After winning AL MVP in 2020 he has put together a couple of solid seasons. In 2021 he had a .261 AVG with 148 hits, 30 doubles, 30 homers, 61 walks and 117 RBI. It was his fifth season with 30-plus homers, sixth with 100-plus RBI and seventh with 30-plus doubles. Then in 2022, he tied a career second-best with 183 hits and a .305 AVG. Unfortunately, his 15 homers and 75 RBI were career lows, but he was getting on base plenty that those numbers do not matter much.
Over these excellent nine seasons, he not only won MVP, but also the 2014 AL Rookie of the Year and three Silver Sluggers. All of this is in addition to three All-Star game appearances. He has done it all so far and is looking to add a few more accolades to his name.
Upgrading Astros
The Astros have been lucky to claim Yuli Gurriel as their superstar first baseman for the last seven seasons, but his run in Houston has come to an end. Additionally, the Astros tried to bolster first base after the All-Star break last season with Trey Mancini, but that turned out to be a major failure as he did not perform well at all outside of an Orioles uniform.
Needing to land an amazing first baseman and aiming to become even more dangerous they grabbed Abreu.
No matter who plays for the Astros they always find ways to perform at the highest level. Even after losing George Springer and Carlos Correa over the past two seasons, they found replacements who made them just as great if not better. They lost Gurriel, but they added Abreu who should keep the streak of success at first base going.
With the offseason in full swing, there have been plenty of rumors surrounding many big names, but the Astros just eliminated any rumors surrounding Jose Abreu. Coming off a World Series title the Astros are pulling out all the stops as they signed one of the most prominent infielders. Abreu knows how to win and he will add so much as the Astros go for back-to-back World Series victories.
