The newest blockbuster this summer features some big-time pitching. The Oakland Athletics (39-65) have traded starting pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino to the New York Yankees (69-34) for some top prospects.

The Oakland Athletics are the second worst team in baseball and this means they are emptying the house. Their first major moves come in two of their long-time reliable pitchers in Montas and Trivino.

New Yankees Pitchers

Frankie Montas is in his seventh season in the majors and his sixth with Oakland. In 91 career starts, he has pitched 552.2 innings where he is 35-32 with a 3.72 ERA and 578 strikeouts. This season is close to a career-best. Despite his 4-9 record, he has a 3.18 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 104.2 innings.

Lou Trivino is in his fifth season in the MLB all of which have been in Oakland. He is having his worst season to date. In 39 games he has gone 32 innings where he has allowed 25 runs giving him a 6.47 ERA and also has a poor 1.875 WHIP.

Montas joins an already stacked starting rotation in New York with Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortez and Jordan Montgomery. Adding another excellent starter will make the Yankees even harder to slow down. For Trivino, the Yankees are hoping he can use the success around him to get his confidence back and become the great reliever he has been in recent years.

Athletics Return

In return for these two pitchers, the Athletics have acquired four prospects. This includes pitchers Ken Waldichuk (No. 5 prospect), Luis Medina (No. 10), JP Sears (No. 20) and second baseman Cooper Bowman (No. 21).

For a rebuilding Athletics team, these are some huge guys to add. They are hoping to turn these young prospects into great MLB players in the coming seasons. It is always tough in the American League West and Oakland is hoping to get back to winning ways with these young stars.

The New York Yankees are having an incredible season and they are doing whatever they can to stay at the top of baseball. Gaining another excellent starter as well as a solid reliever will add to a stacked group of pitchers that are leading the Yankees back to the Playoffs.
