The Washington Nationals continue the complete teardown of their roster by trading infielder Josh Harrison and catcher Yan Gomes to the Oakland Athletics. Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported the deal. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Athletics will be sending Drew Millas, Seth Shuman, Richard Guasch to Washington.
The deal is a surprising one for the Nationals, who traded Trea Turner to the Dodgers last night. In addition, released infielder Starlin Castro today after finding out about his suspension. So, in a period of 24 hours, the Nationals are changing the infield of the team.
This deal is unlike the other deals that the Nationals have completed in this trade cycle. Oakland is not sending back highly valued prospects. Also, the three players the Athletics sent all three players are at the high single A level as of right now.
So, this trade is more of an investment deal for both sides. The Athletics are investing in Harrison and Gomes to put them in position for a playoff run. Both Josh Harrison and Yan Gomes are having great seasons at the plate. Harrison on the season is hitting .294 with 6 home runs and 38 RBI’s. Gomes is hitting .271, 9 home runs, and 35 RBI’s. As the Athletics prime themselves for a postseason run adding two veteran bats to the lineup will be critical for their success.
The Nationals will receive minor leaguers from the Athletics system in hopes that they will become major league ballplayers one day. The next question for the day is will the Nationals make any more moves before the 4 pm deadline. However, with not as much capital left, it would be surprising to see the team trade any more players at this time. The Athletics, on the other hand, have had success at the deadline.
