In a big three-team trade including the Baltimore Orioles (51-51), Houston Astros (67-37) and Tampa Bay Rays (54-48), one of the most sought-after infielders in baseball has been dealt. In this deal, the Astros have made a huge acquisition by acquiring first baseman Trey Mancini from the Baltimore Orioles. Mancini is finally headed to a playoff-caliber team.

The Inspiring Trey Mancini

Trey Mancini has become of the biggest stories in baseball. He quickly made himself known as an excellent all-around player, but he also made headlines by battling and beating cancer in 2020. He came back in 2021 and inspired the entire sports world with an incredible comeback season.

In his five full major league seasons with the Orioles, he has done excellent work. His four full seasons coming into 2022 showed a lot of consistency. He has had at least 140 hits, 20 homers, 70 RBIs and a batting average above .240.

In 92 games in 2022, he put up 95 hits, 10 homers, 41 RBIs and a .268 batting average. He topped off his time in Baltimore with an extremely memorable final at-bat in Camden Yards where he hit a two-run inside-the-park home run.

The Astros are having another incredible season as they are running away with the American League West. Mancini will continue to take on his role as either the first baseman or designated hitter. This will most likely be a revolving door as the Astros have Yuli Gurriel most days at first base and Yordan Alvarez as the DH. As if there wasn’t enough talent in Houston they added one more crucial player.

A Big Deal

The rest of the deal contained a lot of young prospects.

The Astros also received pitcher Jayden Murray from the Rays.

The Orioles came away with a top prospect from both organizations. This includes pitchers Seth Johnson (Rays’ No. 6 prospect) and Chayce McDermott (Astros’ No. 12 prospect). The Orioles are getting better and better each season as they attempt to get back to the Playoffs. With the addition of two young pitchers, they can build up their pitching staff and get back to winning ways.

Finally, the Rays get a much-needed outfielder from the Astros in Jose Siri. The Rays have seen their outfield get completely destroyed by injuries. They already made a deal to get David Peralta from the Arizona Diamondbacks. With a Wild Card spot on the line getting another reliable outfielder will help a ton.

The Houston Astros are in the hunt for the top spot in the American League this season. With the addition of Trey Mancini to an incredible lineup, there is so much manager Dusty Baker is going to be able to do with the lineup each and every game. It will be a tough task, but Mancini should get plenty of opportunities to help the Astros win many more games.
