The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff has been on another level this season. From early on there was a lot of anticipation about how successful they would be and so far they have not disappointed.
On Saturday, July 24, they made history by becoming the fastest team in MLB history to reach 1000 strikeouts. They did it in only 99 games.
Starters
It makes sense how they have been so dominant when they have a starting rotation which includes Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff. These three stars are all in the top 10 in baseball in strikeouts. Burnes and Woodruff are both tied for third most with 146 and Peralta has the sixth most with 140.
Their incredible strikeout rates have definitely been a major part of their earned run averages. Burnes is second in baseball with a 2.12 ERA, Woodruff stands directly behind him in third with 2.14 and Peralta is in sixth with a 2.29.
They are the only team to have three pitchers in the top 10 in both ERA and strikeouts.
Relievers
Not to mention their spectacular bullpen which is stacked with highly experienced athletes and young stars.
The biggest name out of the pen is closer and two-time reliever of the year Josh Hader. The eight inning man is Devin Williams. He is coming off of a 2020 season where he won NL Rookie of the Year and NL Reliever of the Year. New comer Brad Boxberger has fit in perfectly and taken the reigns when Williams and Hader are unavailable.
Hader leads the crew’s bullpen with 64 strikeouts, Williams is second with 52 and Boxberger is in third with 51.
At The Top But Not Done
Through 100 games they sit at 1014 strikeouts which is the most in baseball. That means they are striking out an average of 10.14 hitters per game The only other team with 1000 plus at this point is the Los Angeles Dodgers at 1007. They reached that number in 101 games. That makes the crew the only team to average over 10 strikeouts per game.
The Brewers pitching staff is focused on getting this team back to the playoffs for the fourth straight time. Still, it is not too far fetched to also imagine a Cy Young award at the end of this season.
It makes a lot of sense why this team sits well at the top of the National League Central. If they can keep the success going this pitching staff will make them solid contenders for the National League pennant.
