It looks like former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins is heading to Milwaukee. Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Tuesday that the Brewers and Rhys Hoskins are finalizing a two-year, $34 million contract. The deal reportedly includes an opt-out after the first season.
Hoskins, 30, missed the entire 2023 season after tearing his left ACL during spring training while fielding a ground ball. He tried to return in the postseason but was not ready by the time the Arizona Diamondbacks eliminated the Phillies in the NLCS. With his new contract, Rhys Hoskins allows himself to build up his value before hitting the open market again.
Hoskins has spent his entire MLB career with Philadelphia. The Phillies selected Hoskins in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He made his debut for the Phillies in 2017. He played 50 games for the team that season and finished fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting.
During the 2022 season, Hoskins hit .246/.332/.462. He had 145 hits, the most he has ever had in a season in his career. His 65 extra-base hits were the 10th most in the NL that year. Hoskins helped the Phillies reach the World Series for the first time since 2009.
Hoskins has hit at least 30 home runs twice in a season, reaching the mark in 2018 and 2022. During the 2019 season, Hoskins had 116 walks, the most by any player in the NL that year.
In his career, Hoskins has posted a .242/.353/.492 batting line. He has 588 career hits and 148 home runs.
The Milwaukee Brewers finished first in the NL Central last season with a record of 92-70. They made the postseason for the fifth time in six years but fell in the wild-card round to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Brewers have not won a playoff round since 2018.
