Just a few days before free agency, Broncos are loading up on cap space by cutting three veteran players. Will break down each player and what this means for the team’s approach in free agency
Ronald Darby
Perhaps the biggest name on the list, Darby was their biggest free agent signing in 2021, signing him to three year, 30-million-dollar contract. While he generally played well when he was healthy, Darby only played 16 games in his two seasons with Denver, without having an interception. With the emergence of Damarri Mathis and an underrated slot corner in K’Waun Williams, it would make sense to release him. Darby is 31 and is scheduled to make nine and a half million dollars this year.
Graham Glasgow
Another big free agent signing, Glasgow signed four years, $44 million contract in 2020 and was the highest-paid offensive guard at the time. He played in 37 games in three seasons and was a versatile swingman, occasionally switching from guard to center and vice versa. He was a decent backup but isn’t worth the money his contract demands. With Dalton Risner also hitting the market, the Broncos will have to patch up the interior offensive line in free agency.
Chase Edmonds
After the week eight trade deadline, Edmonds was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Bradley Chubb to the Miami Dolphins. Edmonds had a disappointing first half to the 2022 season, rushing for 120 yards and only three yards per carry. He was outplayed by Raheem Mostert in one of the worst rushing attacks in the league. When he got to Denver, the story is pretty much the same. Playing in five games and 125 rushing yards
With Javontae Williams’s injury status up in the air and Latvious Murray being a free agent, finding a new starting RB is now a higher priority than we previously expected.
With Russell Wilson’s horrendous contract, the Broncos are handicapped in cap space. By cutting all of these players, they save about 27 million off the books. This signals that George Paton and the Penner group are going to be aggressive in free agency, it’s all up to them to salvage this shipwreck.
