The Browns vs Chargers game ended in yet another loss for the Browns. 30-28 was the final score and there were many opportunities to win this game for the Browns. They started out 14-3 in the first quarter against one of the most electrifying offenses in the NFL. After that, it became a back-and-forth between the two offenses. On defense both teams allowed the opposing offenses to do whatever they wanted for the majority of the game. It was a shootout that ended with one team getting the ball at the last minute with an opportunity to win the game. Cleveland had a chance to win on a game-winning field goal. Cade York missed it from fifty-four yards.

Browns Defense

This might have been the worst defensive performance of the young season so far. The Browns defense gave up over two hundred rushing yards against the worst rushing team in the NFL. It was one play for a seventy-yard run by Austin Ekeler that jump-started this running attack. In the first quarter, the defense started out well allowing only three points to the Chargers. Then in the second quarter allowed seventeen unanswered points. In addition, this unit missed multiple tackles in this game that would have helped. They did however limit Justin Herbert, but the connection to Mike Williams all game was unstoppable. The Cleveland Browns defense has been abysmal the last two games and the season-ending injury to Anthony Walker Jr. have been a major loss. It might be time for a change in the defensive coordinator job.

Browns Offense

The Browns offense had a perfect start to the game, going up 14-3 in the first quarter. This Cleveland Browns offense was able to move however and whenever against this Chargers defense. Jacoby Brissett early on was able to spread the ball around to multiple receivers. David Njoku, Amari Cooper, and Donovan People-Jones all had 50 or more receiving yards. Nick Chubb was able to run for 134 yards on seventeen carries and two touchdowns. Kareem Hunt added forty seven yards on eleven carries. Kevin Stefanski called a great game and put the offense in a postion to win the game with 2:40 left in the game. However, in a postion to win the game Jacoby threw a crucial interception. On that particular play he could have run the ball himself for a first down, out of bounds or even a touchdown. After that the offense was able to get the ball back from the Chargers on the Chargers forty yard line. The offense got in position to setup a fifty-four yard field goal. Cade York missed it.

Special Teams

Special teams have been a thorn in the side of the Browns for multiple seasons now. When it seemed to have finally corrected the punt return issues the kicking misques seem to have arrived. Cade York missed two field goals in the game. One from forty-five yards and another from fifty-four yards. The most crucial was the potential game winning one. Another change in coordinators might be needed here as well. This unit must be upgraded. York needs more time to develop and more in game opportunities to kick as well.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers were able to run the ball successfully. Herbert and Williams were unstoppable in the passing game. Mike Williams had over 100 recieving yards. This offense responded each time the Browns scored a touchdown yesterday. It went back and forth. Defensively they gave up alot. The Browns were able to do whatever they needed to agaisnt this unit. Allowed over 200 yards rushing and 230 passing yards. They went for it on 4th and 2 at there forty yard line and did not convert it. If the Browns make there field goal Brandon Staley would be facing harsh critcism.

Conclusion

Five games into the season the Cleveland Browns defense isnt good right now. This defensive unit does not pay attention to detail and can not finish a game. This unit has a issue with finishing and it shows when they gave up the most points in the second and fourth quarters. Kevin Stefanksi really needs to consider coordinator changes at the end of the season. The offense has well exceeded expecations and Stefanski has put this team in postion to win games. It is clear the organization knows something needed to be done because general manager Andrew Berry made a trade for a linebacker Deion Jones. He made this trade hours after the Browns loss to the Chargers. This move says they are not settling for lack luster perfomances. October 10th, 2022 Deshaun Watson is back in the building with the team.
