On Monday, an announcement was made that the Boston Bruins fired Bruce Cassidy. He finished his sixth season with the team before being let go. Cassidy took his team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019. The following year he coached through the challenges of COVID and the Bruins were the only team to reach 100 points in the shortened season. That same year he won the Jack Adams Award (coach of the year). This past season the Bruins finished as the wild card in the Eastern Conference. This post season was short as they lost game 7 of round 1 to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Boston now joins several other teams in the hunt for a new coach. Detroit Red Wings decided not to renew Jeff Blashill’s contract next season. Rick Bowness chose to step aside from his spot behind the Dallas Stars bench. The Philadelphia Flyers announced they will not be offering their coaching spot to interim head coach Mike Yeo. Peter DeBoer was let go from the Las Vegas Golden Knights in mid-May. Along with them, the Winnipeg Jets have begun a search for their new coach, and are interviewing current interim Dave Lowry.

Bruce Cassidy joins a strong list of free-agent coaches. With his track record, he could very well find a new bench to manage quickly. Really he shouldn’t sit too long before interviewing somewhere. It will be weird to see him coaching another team. However, he truly loved Boston and he could decide to retire.
