Bucks Adrian Griffin

The Milwaukee Bucks have identified themselves as one of the best teams in the NBA this season. However, Tuesday afternoon, the Bucks shockingly fired Adrian Griffin amid a 30-13 start to the season. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news.

The Bucks fired longtime head coach Mike Budenholzer over the summer and replaced him with first-year Adrian Griffin. The latter hasn’t done a bad job. He has the Bucks second in the Eastern Conference and they blew the Celtics out just a week or so ago. At the time of the hiring, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo had supported the decision to hire Griffin. However, according to reports, Giannis lost faith in the first-year coach.

This last offseason, the Bucks made it clear that they wanted to win. They went out and traded for a top point guard, Damian Lillard. So firing a coach mid-season came with some difficulty. To be in a spot that the Bucks are in, you almost have to have the next coach lined up. The Bucks do, as they plan to pursue a small pool of accomplished and available veteran head coaches.

The Bucks are likely to target Doc Rivers as a new coach, though until they find a new coach Joe Prunty will serve as the interim coach. The firing comes on the heels of a 122-113 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

“This was a difficult decision to make during the season,” said Bucks General Manager Jon Horst in a statement. “We are working immediately toward hiring our next head coach. We thank Coach Griffin for his hard work and contributions to the team.”

Despite the strong record, the Bucks have struggled at times this season. Especially on the defensive side. They’ve slipped from fourth in defense last season to 22nd this year. They’re also coming off of back-to-back games against the Pistons, where they gave up 135 and 113 points respectively.
