One of the first dominos in NBA coaching hires for the 2023 offseason has fallen. After moving on from Mike Budenholzer after the abysmal end to their 2022 season, the Milwaukee Bucks hired a coach out of Toronto. But not the coach many were expecting. And for said coach, years of head coaching interviews have finally paid off. The Bucks and Adrian Griffin can finally call off their searches. Griffin will lead the Bucks coming into the 2023 NBA season.
Nick Nurse, Kenny Atkinson (Golden State Warriors assistant coach), and Griffin were rumored to be the three finalists for the head coaching job. All three of the finalists met with Giannis Antetokounmpo at some point during the hiring process.
The Bucks hire Adrian Griffin after he spent a total of four years on the Raptors bench. Griffin actually started his coaching career in Milwaukee back in 2008 and has moved throughout the league since. He is also a former assistant for the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, and Oklahoma City Thunder. He also enjoyed a long NBA career spanning from 1996 to 2008.
Nurse is expected to move on to a new head coach opening in the NBA, possibly to the Phoenix Suns. The Suns parted with their former head coach Monty Williams after back-to-back disappointing ends to seasons. However, there are still openings across the league, so the possibilities vary. Meanwhile, the Bucks and Griffin will turn towards finalizing their deal in contract negotiations.
