On Thursday, Carlos Correa of the Minnesota Twins exited the game with an apparent injury. In the top of the seventh inning, Correa got hit by a pitch. The pitch, a 94 mph fastball from reliever Bryce Jarvis of the Arizona Diamondbacks, hit Correa on the wrist. Correa’s reaction was immediate and devastating. Correa dropped his bat and walked to the dugout as he shook his head and held his arm. Once in the dugout, the look on his face showed frustration and disappointment. It seemed like Carlos Correa had an injury that would sit him down for an extended period.
Twins’ fans and media took no time going online expecting a callup and the worst news. Brooks Lee was a popular name thrown out and many fans anticipate his debut. While many hope Lee is called up soon, an injury to Carlos Correa would be the most unfortunate way for that to happen.
Postgame
Carlos Correa left the game right away and went to get X-rays. The X-rays revealed no fracture in Correa’s wrist. All he had to show for it was a bruise, to the excitement of fans.
Correa got interviewed shortly after the game. What he said came as a shock to most, especially those that watched the pitch and reaction live. Correa insisted that he will be in the lineup on Friday in Seattle. Many people seemed unsure, especially with this injury, but Carlos Correa was indeed listed as batting second and playing shortstop against the Mariners.
Leaving a Hole
Carlos Correa has had a great 2024 season. After an up and down 2023, Correa seems like he is back to his old form. Correa is currently batting .309, which is currently top ten in the league. He would not be at this point if it was not for his month of June, though.
Correa has been near the league lead in multiple hitting categories for the month. His batting average was sticking around .250 for much of the season up to this point. His excellent couple of weeks brought his average up nearly 60 points. Correa has also been a huge part of keeping the Minnesota Twins in the thick of the playoff hunt.
Not only has Correa’s bat been important (especially as of late), but his glove and arm at shortstop make him nearly impossible to replace. His hitting and fielding this year has re-entered him in the conversation for one of the top shortstops in baseball. Players like Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals and Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles aren’t letting up, though, so an All-Star nod for Correa may be difficult.
Even if the Twins were able to call up the anticipated prospect in Brooks Lee, the hole that a Carlos Correa injury would leave would be massive. The Minnesota Twins have depth and options like utilityman Willi Castro and former shortstop Royce Lewis, but to lose a leader at the halfway point of the season would be devastating.
