Breaking news: the Carolina Panthers fire Matt Rhule after starting the season, 1-4. Rhule previously held the head coaching position at Temple and Baylor University before jumping into the realm of NFL head coaching. His previous success in college football didn’t quite translate to the pros. However, Steve Wilks will take over as the interim HC. The Panthers become the first team in the NFL this season to have an open job position for next year.
Panthers Moving Forward
With Matt Rhule out of the building now, Steve Wilks has been named as the interim head coach. However, this begs the question of what will happen for Carolina moving forward. Wilks was recently the Defensive Coordinator in Cleveland before joining Rhule’s regime as the Defensive Passing Game Coordinator/Secondary Coach in Carolina. Wilks’ previous head coaching experience came with the Arizona Cardinals, where he was let go after one 3-13 season.
It is hard to imagine what this means for Baker Mayfield, and by extension, the quarterback position as a whole, for them in the aftermath. Mayfield has now played under five head coaches since being drafted in 2018. His list of offensive coordinators is longer than that. In essence, this is nothing new to the seasoned quarterback, but the team’s lack of offensive firepower has fans booing them weekly. Sam Darnold has yet to be cleared to return to action, leaving Mayfield to shoulder most of the hits. Sadly, their third-round pick, Matt Coral, was put on injured reserve in August, ending his season before it began.
