It’s come that time of year, where NFL teams start to sign free agents as depth. At least the ones who weren’t signed earlier in the season. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Rams agreed to terms with veteran QB Carson Wentz. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.
The Rams are currently dealing with some injuries at the quarterback position. Starter Matthew Stafford missed week 9 with a thumb injury. Brett Rypien got the start and that didn’t go in the Rams’ favor. Rypien went 13 for 28 with 130 yards and an interception as the Rams lost 20-3 to the Green Bay Packers.
NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported that Rypien would be waived as a result of the signing.
It is expected that Carson Wentz will serve as the backup for the Rams. With LA on a bye in Week 10, Stafford is expected to be healthy for the week 11 matchup against the Seahawks. The bye week will also provide Wentz some time to get familiar with the Rams’ offensive system.
Wentz, 30, spent the 2022 NFL Season with the Washington Commanders. In eight games, he threw for 1755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The poor start led to the Commanders’ benching Wentz and cutting him in the offseason. The peak for Wentz came when he was playing for the Philadelphia Eagles where he was a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl Champion. Since leaving Philly, he has struggled with both Indianapolis and Washington.
This is the first time in his career that Wentz has been signed with the expectation that he’ll be the backup. Previous landing spots, he has been the starter. That won’t be the case in Los Angeles. Although, it also wouldn’t be shocking to see him in game action at some point in the next couple weeks. Stafford has consistently dealt with injuries during the latter portion of his career.
