This is not a typo, Duck Hodges has made it to the CFL. Well, his first name is actually Devlin. But he is best known as Duck. This is because he is very skilled in….duck calling. Rest assured that is not why he made his way north of the border. He is going to play quarterback, or try to at least.
Time Out, Who Is This Guy?
I’m so glad you asked. Duck Hodges was undrafted in 2019 out of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He is an accurate passer with a quick release time. He also broke the FCS passing record with 14,584 yards as a four year starter. That broke Steve McNair’s record. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and got playing time when Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph were hurt. Rudolph also didn’t play well which lead to more opportunities for Hodges. In one season with the Steelers, he had a 5/8 TD-INT ratio with 1,063 passing yards, a 62.5 completion percentage, and 71.5 quarterback rating. He didn’t make the team the following year. Now, he will look to make an impact with the struggling Ottawa Redblacks.
Can He Get On The Field?
It’s certainly possible. The team is not playing very good right now. Matt Nichols at QB has not been enough to get them over the hump. He was signed to a three year deal so the Redblacks must have some timetable of when they would like to play him. He will need some time to learn the offense but has a strong chance to get in after that. Ottawa fans are hoping Duck Hodges doesn’t quack under pressure.
