After missing playoffs, for eight years in a row, there have been some changes made to the Angels coaching staff. Earlier we found out three Angels coaches will not be returning in the 2023 season. These consist of hitting coach Jeremy Reed, assistant hitting coach John Malle and third base coach Mike Gallego. Throughout the off-season, more staff will likely change.

How Did the Angels Do Under Hitting Coach Jeremy Reed?

The Angels finished third in the American League West. Jeremy Reed was the Angels hitting coach for four seasons. Their offense had the most strikeouts in baseball with a total of 1,539. They ranked 24th in batting average, 22nd in hits with 1,265, and 25th in total runs scored, RBIs, and walks.

Throughout the season we saw prospects such as Brandon Marsh struggle heavily at the plate and lead the team in strikeouts at one point. As a result, he was traded at the deadline to the Philadelphia Phillies. After the trade, Marsh has had a huge change in his offensive game. The Phillies hitting coach helped him change his stance and be more disciplined at the plate.

However, we saw Luis Rengifo and Taylor Ward have offensive breakout seasons this year. Both players doubled their career stats last season. Even with their breakout season and having superstar players like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, it wasn’t enough to get them to playoffs.

Angels Coaching Staff – Coaches John Mallee and Mike Gallego

John Mallee has been a coach for over 22 years in professional baseball and has overseen many different organizations. He was with the Angels for the past three seasons. However, along with Jeremy Reed, he wasn’t helping the Angels hitters as most of them regressed last season.

Mike Gallego was a player for 12 seasons and working within the organization since 2019. Many people think he will return to the Angels coaching staff just not as the third base coach.

What Does This Mean For the Future of the Angels?

The Angels have one season to show Shohei Ohtani why he should resign with them. Hiring a new coaching staff can be a vital change that this team needs. After having two fun months of baseball then losing 14 games in a row proved that Jeremy Reed wasn’t working for this team. As we have to see in Marsh’s development since being traded proves that the team needs someone new. The Angel’s future could start changing if they hire the right people for the job.
