Chiefs vs Jaguars Takeaways

The Kansas City Chiefs clinched their fifth AFC Championship appearance while the Jacksonville Jaguars fell short.

One-Legged Mahomes Can Get the Job Done

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a significant right leg injury during their second drive after a solid start to the game. Mahomes finished the drive but had to hop around to be even able to hand the ball off before being sent to the locker room for x-rays. The MVP favorite came back onto the field to start the second half with a heavily taped ankle but would do just enough to escape with a victory. The critical drive came in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to ten as Mahomes threw his second touchdown of the day off his front foot. As Mahomes injury will be talked about all of next week, he adds another story to his legacy.

The Comeback Kid Falls Short

After last week 27 point comeback, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawerence couldn’t overcome their deficit. Two plays changed this game, with wide receiver Christian Kirk dropping a second-quarter 60-yard pass that would’ve put the Jaguars in the red zone. Then in the red zone with six minutes left in the game, wide receiver Jamal Agnew fumbled the ball, which would be the Jaguars’ dagger. Throughout this postseason, the Jaguars have proved to everyone that they can hang with the best, and that won’t change next season.

Chiefs Run Game Makes the Difference

With an injured Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid relied on his run game in rookie running back Isiah Pacheco as he amassed 95 yards and a huge 39-yard run during a second-quarter drive. In years past, the Chiefs opened up the running game come playoff time, and it seems Pacheco will continue to be involved along with running back Jerick McKinnon. McKinnon was used both in the passing game and run the game, as his pass blocking allowed Mahomes to stay upright.
