Clemson’s Offense Needs Improved Production From Receivers
Clemson’s offense struggled last year. Their issues went beyond quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. Dropped passes proved costly for the Tigers last year. Receivers injuries meant Uiagalelei had a hard time developing a connection with them.
Two Clemson starters, EJ Williams and Beaux Collins, are recovering from injuries. Head Coach Dabo Swinney expects both to return to practice soon. If healthy both would start for Clemson.
Offensive Line Issues Plagued Clemson Last Year
Outside of Jordan McFadden and Mason Trotter every offensive lineman struggled for the Tigers last year. The interior linemen proved to be an issue whether Clemson played UConn or Georgia. Injuries and youth set them back.
Six different lines started in the first nine games for the Tigers last year. New Offensive Coordinator sounded hopeful about their progress in fall practice so far. “I’m so fired up about these guys,” Streeter said after Monday’s practice. “Number one, the character that they have and then the passion that they have. They all got the want to and we’ve been talking about toughness and mental toughness for a long time and that’s what these guys have. So there’s no doubt we’ve got that potential to be really, really, really good.”
Will Uiagalelei Hold Off Klubnik As Starting QB?
Swinney says Uiagalelei remains the Tigers starting quarterback. “DJ is the starter for sure. This is where we are,” Swinney said. “Obviously, he has to go play well. Just like anybody else, you have to go play well. We certainly hope to get Cade as much opportunity as we can.”
Cade is Freshmen Cade Klubnik, who by all reports has had a strong spring and fall. The Tigers want to have Klubnik be a part of the gameplan every week. Uiagalelei dropped 25 pounds and feels confident he has a better grasp of the offense will play better. The number one quarterback in the 2022 class may not wait long to start if Uiagalelei cannot improve on last seasons numbers.
