The 2021 season review for the Cleveland Browns is in. Coming in, high expectations were put on this Cleveland team.
But as Cole Haro’s power rankings notes, things have quickly gone south. Following a divisional-round exit to the Kansas City Chiefs back in Jan. 2021, Super-Bowl-or-Bust was the target for the Browns.
However, things began to fall apart starting in Week 2.
After an opening week loss, the Browns hosted the Houston Texans. Baker Mayfield threw a second-quarter pass that got intercepted to Texans safety Justin Reid.
Consequently, Mayfield made a tackle on the return and injured his left shoulder. He would finish the game, but his play over the remainder of the season was negatively affected.
And, as Terry Pluto notes, 2021 now seems like a distant memory.
Many a fan began to question where the magic went. The last time the Browns and Steelers met in Pittsburgh, the Browns got a playoff victory.
Coach Kevin Stefanski also seems to have lost his form in the 2021-22 campaign after a Coach of the Year recognition last season.
Mayfield will have surgery this coming week ahead of the final game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
As a result, veteran Case Keenum will get the nod to start on Sunday.
Many questions will swarm the Cleveland Browns heading into the 2022 off-season. Is Baker Mayfield the guy moving forward? Will Kevin Stefanski find his success from 2020? How will the team look in September?
These will be difficult questions for GM Andrew Berry to address. But, for now, the season must come to a disappointing end.
