It’s the summer and during this time in the NFL not much is really going on. The sports news cycle doesn’t have much to cover. But for all NFL teams mandatory mini camp is in full swing. Albeit helmets and shorts, this is all the football fan has until training camp in July. No different for the Cleveland Browns. So we’ll cover what the team looked to accomplished these last three days.

Offense

When Kevin Stefanski was hired as head coach 3 seasons ago. Many raved over his offensive philosophy and wondered what he could do with a struggling Browns offense. Year 1 was great, year 2 not so much. With the Cleveland Browns bringing in Deshaun Watson they undoubtedly want to find the right flow and rhythm of the game to fit Watson. For much of the voluntary mini camp it was ran like a passing camp. Cleveland wants to solidify its passing game after a abysmal season especially in the passing game. Upgrading all around is well needed. Finally the main goal is to create an explosive offense like so many expected and hoped for under Kevin Stefanski.

Defense

Along with Kevin Stefanski defensive coordinator Joe woods is entering his 3rd season at the helm. He has the benefit of returning 9 of 11 defensive starters from last season. With year three under his belt he’s looking to have the defense pickup from where they left off last season. Based on defensive stats NFL.com had the browns ranked as #6 defense from a season ago. According to starting safety John Johnson III he said this year is different because there is no learning curve. It guys coming back getting into the system and just flying around getting after it. From the defensive line to the defensive backs this defense wants to be much better than last year.

Special Teams

With a team as talented on paper like the Cleveland Browns, special teams has been a major weakness. Free agent signee Jakeem Grant is looking to be a dynamic return man. One who can flip field position and create a spark for the team whenever needed. He has the ability to be an elite return man. Fourth round draft pick Cade York has impressed early on in camp. York is looking to prove he worthy of being drafted in the fourth round. He is looking prove to be the first reliable kicker since Phil Dawson days. Overall the unit wants to be viable and not a liability.

Baker Mayfield Trade?

Baker Mayfield being excused from mandatory mini camp, both sides want to move on. Reports are the Carolina Panthers want to get a deal done soon. The issue is how much the Browns are willing to pay on his salary.

Deshaun Watson Suspension Update

Waiting to hear from the NFL and wondering when the decision will be made. No one around the league knows much information on a possible suspension. Reports are the decision could come around the 4th of July weekend and or before training camp. Until then Watson and the Browns will continue to work through this new offensive system and building chemistry with his new team.
