The Cleveland Browns announced the signing of safety Juan Thornhill on Thursday. Coming from the Kansas City Chiefs the Browns have found their guy at safety. Since the start of free agency Cleveland has had a busy week signing multiple players to elevate their defense. While underperforming on defense a season ago upgrades were needed. Bringing an abundant amount of experience with him Thornhill will be the new man roaming the backend of the defense.

Juan Thornhill Signs

The Browns and Thornhill agree to terms on a new three-year deal that’s worth 21 million dollars. 14 million dollars of that is fully guaranteed at signing. Above all Thornhill is a two-time super bowl champion playing with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thornhill brings massive experience to a Browns team looking to win a super bowl. In other words, Thornhill has appeared in 65 total games. He has started 52 games in his career and has played in nine playoff games. He is a big addition to this team. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski says “Juan is a talented young player who brings a ton of experience from a winning environment”.

Important to realize that with the signing of Thornhill, it will be the third defensive player Cleveland has signed to be a starter via free agency. He will replace John Johnson who was officially released on Wednesday. A former second-round pick in 2019, the former Chiefs safety started all 16 games he appeared in during the 2022 season. In addition to his experience, he has a total of eight career interceptions.

Production

The Browns have found their true centerfielder at the safety position. For years now this team has lacked a safety that can play on the backend. In addition, Thornhill excels in coverage and will help prevent big plays from occurring. For the duration of his career, Thornhill has only allowed 12 touchdowns. That includes him only giving up just one touchdown in 2021. He is a sure tackler. In each of his four seasons, his number of missed tackles has decreased. That is very significant because the Browns struggled with missed tackles last season.

Fit

The signing of Thornhill is a perfect fit for what the Browns need. Cleveland has three corners that can play man coverage but lacked the safety net of having a player behind them over the top. Having Thornhill allows new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to run his wide nine styles of defense. It also allows strong safety Grant Delpit to be moved around the field and utilize his strengths much better. Above all, this is the perfect pairing at a very great price for the Browns.
