Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Monday that he will retire at the end of the 2021-2022 season. Krzyzewski has been the Head Coach of the Duke Blue Devils for 41 years since arriving in 1980.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski released a statement announcing his retirement,
“My family and I view today as a celebration, Our time at both West Point and Duke has been beyond amazing and we are thankful and honored to have led two college programs at world-class institutions for more than four decades. That, coupled with 11 unforgettable years as the United States National Team coach, has resulted in a remarkable journey. Certainly, I have been blessed to coach some of the finest young men and greatest players in basketball history as a direct result of these unique opportunities. For us, there is no greater joy than being part of our players’ respective endeavors through basketball, and more importantly, their lives off the court.”

Duke’s outgoing vice president and Director of Athletics Kevin White spoke about Krzyzewski’s love of his players and his professionalism throughout the years,
“Mike will long be best remembered, if not deeply respected and admired, for his unabashed love and utter devotion to his players. Again, the consummate teacher, coach, and mentor, coupled with his highly unique curriculum around life lessons and service will surely live at the pinnacle level of his chosen profession in perpetuity.”

Before serving as head coach of the Duke Blue Devils, he served as the assistant coach for the Indiana Hoosiers in the 1974-1975 season. From 1975 to the end of the 1979-1980 season, Krzyzewski was the head coach at his alma mater, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In his five seasons at West Point, he led Army to a 73-59 record.
In Krzyzewski’s 41 seasons with the Blue Devils, his record with the Blue Devils is 1,097–302. Throughout his four decades with the Blue Devils, he has won five national championships, 12 Final Four appearances, 15 ACC Conference Championships, and has had the best record in the ACC 12 times.
Coach Krzyzewski has set many records throughout his time as a head coach. Jan. 25, 2015, Coach Krzyzewski became the first coach to win 1000 games. Two years later, Nov. 11, 2017, he became the first coach to win 1000 games with one school. Then March 17, 2018, he won his 1,099th game, which passed the record set by the late Pat Summit. Finally, on Feb. 16, 2019, Krzyzewski became the all-time winningest coach at any level in college athletics.
Coach Krzyzewski, throughout his career, was coached the U.S. National Team; he served as the Head Coach of the U.S. National Team from 2005-2016. In that time span, he won three gold medals at the Olympic Games in 2008, 2012, and 2016. In addition, won the FIBA World Championship in 2010 and 2014.
All of Coach Krzyzewski’s success in his career has led to being enshrined in two halls of fame. He is a Basketball Hall of Fame member enshrined in 2001 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame enshrined in 2006.
However, as well with the announcement of Krzyzewski’s retirement, Duke announced the selection for their new head coach Jon Scheyer has been named the 20th Head Coach of Duke Basketball.
Duke prepares for their final season with the legendary Coach Mike Krzyzewski before handing over one of the game’s most successful programs to Jon Scheyer in the fall of 2022.
