Many have felt that Cody Rhodes should have gone over on Roman Reigns in the main event of Wrestlemania 39. Reigns is currently on the longest modern title streak in WWE history, and many believed Rhodes was the babyface to dethrone him finally.
The Usos loss to Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn was thought to have signaled the end of the Bloodline’s long reign atop both Raw and Smackdown. The Tribal Chief spoiled any of those thoughts with his win over Rhodes. Without a doubt, Reigns will pass the 1000-day mark, with Summerslam being a potential event for him to drop the titles.
However, it’s important to note that WWE storylines are carefully crafted narratives. Fightful reported Reigns Vs. Rhodes was planned last summer, with the result established weeks before Wrestlemania. Conversely, after the first Raw after Wrestlemania, it seems WWE has put Rhodes on the John Cena path. Brock Lesnar attacked him in the show’s closing moments, which could indicate a big push for Rhodes to become a top babyface. A feud with Lesnar could be exactly what Rhodes needs to get over with the WWE Universe and establish himself as a true main-event player.
Should Cody Rhodes Have Won Against Roman Reigns?
Reigns’ list of baby faces he’s defeated features a who’s who of talent. The list includes Braun Strowman, The Fiend, Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson), Edge, Finn Balor, Cesaro (AEW’s Claudio), Drew Mcintyre, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and even Logan Paul. With no one left, Rhodes seemed to be the best choice.
The storyline involving his father’s failure to capture WWE gold and his triumphant return to win the Royal Rumble set the stage for his first title run. There was also a rumor that Reigns might take an extended break after Wrestlemania to pursue other endeavors.
The American Nightmare’s win would have been the perfect way to cap Wrestlemania season and usher in a new start. The company missed out on a big pop and moment for Rhodes. His winning the title at a later event won’t have the same effect.
Who Else Is Left To Challenge Roman Reigns?
Outside of Rhodes, Seth Rollins is the obvious choice. He is the only opponent during this run that was not pinned by the Tribal Chief. Rollins also has a history with Reigns, having been a member of The Shield with him. Although Rollins jumping ahead of Rhodes in the pecking order could be seen as unfair, Rollins is an established top-tier talent who can hold his own against Reigns.
