Gardner Minshew Signs With Colts

The Indianapolis Colts were expected to make maneuvers at the quarterback position this offseason. Especially, after finishing with an abysmal 4-12-1 record in 2022. They have bolstered that position by signing former Philadelphia Eagles QB Gardner Minshew on Thursday.

The Colts currently hold the fourth overall pick in next month’s NFL Draft, they’re expected to select a QB. If the Colts stick to selecting one of the better quarterbacks in this year’s draft, Minshew can serve as a young experienced veteran for the rookie. It bodes well and should give them some peace knowing that the constant problems may be coming to an end.

Gardner Minshew, 26, will re-unite with first-year Colts coach Shane Steichen, who has served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. While with the Eagles, Minshew started two games in place of injured Eagles starter Jalen Hurts last season. He’ll bring some familiarity with Steichen’s offense. Something that bodes well inside of what is expected to be a young QB room.

“I think he’s really intelligent,” Steichen said in 2021. “He’s a football junkie.”

Minshew has started 32 games in his four seasons, including 14 as a rookie with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. He has thrown 44 touchdowns versus 15 interceptions in his career, during which he has posted a 93.1 passer rating.

Other quarterbacks in Indianapolis

The Colts still have some decisions to make at the quarterback position. That includes, what they’ll do with veteran Nick Foles, who is still under contract for another season. The Colts released last year’s starter, Matt Ryan, on Wednesday. However, they also have 2021 draft pick Sam Ehlinger still on the roster as well.

There was a great deal of turmoil at the position a season ago. Ryan was benched twice, Foles suffered a season-ending injury, and Ehlinger was promoted to the starter, only to be demoted later. Now with Foles nearing the end of his career, and Ehlinger having limited experience, the recent signee, Minshew serves as the most viable option. It’ll if the Colts options if and when they draft a quarterback.
