The Washington Commanders have cut quarterback Carson Wentz after just one season with the team, according to Adam Schefter.

This move frees up $26.17 million in cap space.

In a corresponding move, the Commanders also released safety Bobby McCain, creating an additional $2.32 million in cap.

The Commanders and the Indianapolis Colts struck a deal for Wentz before the 2022-23 season started. Washington received Wentz and the Colts second-round pick, while Indy received Washington’s second and two thirds.

The hope was that Ron Rivera could resurrect Wentz’s career, who was an MVP candidate at one point. Ultimately, that did not work out for both sides.

Wentz, who appeared in just eight games this season, threw just 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions. He also accumulated a career-low QBR of 32.9. This ranked fifth worst among quarterbacks.

Wentz’s season went downhill after suffering a fracture in his throwing-hand ring finger. After being put on injury reserve, the Commanders rolled with Taylor Heinicke, who retained the starting job until Rivera returned it to Wentz in Week 17. He remained ineffective and was named third-string quarterback for the finale.

Moreover, Wentz is now free to sign with any team. And the quarterback could eye another reunion with Frank Reich, who was just hired as the Carolina Panthers head coach.

The Philadelphia Eagles traded Wentz in the 2021 offseason after selecting him No. 2 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Furthermore, he has amassed 22,129 yards, 151 touchdowns and 66 interceptions during his seven-year tenure.
