The San Francisco 49ers might have made arguably the biggest splash of the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline by acquiring Chase Young. NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo was the first to report the news.
Young was the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. A sensational prospect who has struggled to stay healthy in the NFL. His Rookie Campaign has been the only season so far that he’s played more than 10 games. That was a highly productive year as he logged 7.5 sacks and won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. In the current season, the former pro-bowler has played in seven games, racking up a total of five sacks and nine QB hits.
The former Ohio State product will reunite with former teammate Nick Bosa to form a formidable duo on the outer edges of the 49ers Defense. That defensive line also features Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrove on the inside. What was already an impressive defensive line got better with the price of a third-round pick. A solid deal made by 49ers General Manager John Lynch.
It appears the Commanders are looking to restart after a 3-5 start. They had already sent Montez Sweat away earlier in the day. While the 49ers appear to be gearing up for another deep playoff run with a 5-3 start, adding Chase Young to this defense will make them a tough out.
The Washington Commanders had already declined Young’s player option for next season, making him a free agent. Which means he could be a one-year rental unless the 49ers already have plans to extend him. If they fail to do so, they will likely get a compensation pick that prevents drastic loss in draft capital.
