Philipp Grubauer is struggling right now. In ten games played thus far, he has only four wins. Grubauer gave up five goals against Arizona which turned into their first win of the season. It is not all is fault as the team has had some bad games. But, the fact that he was paid a lot of money to provide stability in net is making the situation troubling. Save to say fans are getting restless with the supposed top goalie in Seattle.
Time To Panic?
In all honesty…yes. The German netminder had looked stout with his days with the Avalanche and was part of the Capitals cup winning team. That’s why he got the big bucks in free agency. He has looked anything but on a consistent basis at any point this season. Chris Driedger is the backup goalie and had good moments in Chicago. It is important to note however that Driedger has only played twice for the Kraken. He gave up four goals to the Golden Knights in his most recent appearance. Joey Daccord has also played two games but lost both as well. Daccord is 1-6 in his NHL career. Any team would be hard pressed to get a quality goaltender at this point of the season.
Stuck For Now
The Kraken don’t have a ton of options right now. It’s as much as a scheme issue right now. The goals are getting given up during critical situations. They could go to more a split system and alternate which goalie starts like other teams are doing to take the pressure of Philipp Grubauer. Treating him like Andrei Vasilevskiy and giving him multiple starts in a row has not worked to this point. The platoon approach is certainly worth a shot has they continue to lose ground in the pacific division. Seattle sits dead last at 4-8-1.
