The UFC’s biggest star Conor McGregor recently took to Twitter to announce his return in 2024. McGregor stated that he plans on fighting during International Fight Week at the end of June. His opponent will be “Iron” Michael Chandler. While both of these fighters were coaches in the last season of The Ultimate Fighter, it has been an extended period of time since the show concluded.
McGregor jokingly stated that the fight would be at Middleweight, a weight class that neither competitor has fought at in their career. This would be a terrible look for the UFC, as neither Chandler nor McGregor are viable contenders at 185 or 170 pounds.
At Lightweight each fighter has captured a world title with Chandler being a former Bellator Champion and McGregor earning UFC gold. Fans would immediately lose interest if this fight is taking place north of 155 pounds.
McGregor vs. Chandler
UFC President Dana White has yet to make an statement regarding this matchup. Until top officials from the UFC have confirmed the bout, it is only speculation. McGregor who was having dinner at the time seemed to be somewhat serious in his announcement. At Lightweight this fight has massive implications for the division. If this matchup takes place at any other weight class the significance of the contest will diminish. Conor McGregor recently suffered setbacks against Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier and is returning from a major leg injury.
It will be interesting to see when this fight gets announced and at what weight. McGregor is now 35 years old and is looking to make one final run at UFC gold. Chandler has patiently waited on the sidelines for a fight with McGregor and it sounds like he will get just that on June 29th for International Fight Week.
