Despite some struggles in the past few seasons, Craig Kimbrel has long been known as one of the most dominant closers. Now he finds himself headed to the seventh team in his career. He has signed a one-year deal worth $10 million with the Phillies.
The last time Kimbrel appeared for an NL East team, he was arguably the best closer from 2011-14. Now he’ll return to that division. He continued to be excellent when he was dealt to the Padres, and later the Red Sox. Since then though, he has seen some ups and downs with both the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, as well as the Dodgers, who he pitched for most recently.
Last season with the Dodgers, Kimbrel sported a 6-7 record with a 3.75 ERA across 60 innings. In that time he recorded 22 saves and struck out 72 opponents. Though when it came to the playoffs, management decided not to use Kimbrel.
The Phillies pitching staff struggled against the Houston Astros in the World Series just a few months ago. That has been one of the biggest focuses for the Phillies this off-season.
Whether or not Craig Kimbrel can return to his old form, is yet to be told. However, the eight-time all-star should not be underestimated.
More to come.
